The reelection bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, August 27 got a major boost as over 1000 health and environmental volunteers from the 18 local government areas of Edo state declared their support for the second term bid of the governor.
The volunteers under the aegis of Young Environmental Health Officers Forum (YEHOF) also promised to mobilise over 5, 000 other voters across the state to ensure victory for Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Phillip Shaibu.
Speaking to journalists in Benin city, coordinator of the forum, who represented the other volunteers, Joy Oluwagbohunmi, noted that “the decision to back the governor was on account of the government’s sterling performance in the first term.”
Her words: “As volunteers across the 18 local government areas of Edo state, we have seen the many achievements of Governor Obaseki in all sectors and we are impressed, hence, we decided to support him to consolidate on the successes recorded in his first term.
“We want continuity of the governor’s people-centric governance; his laudable projects are there for everyone to see. The governor has continued to earn the love and support of the majority of Edo people.”
On her part, the public relations officer of the forum, Rebecca Imuentiyan said: “The governor has redefined governance, thereby improving the living standards of the people. He has performed exceedingly well across all sectors.
“With his projects and programmes in the last three years and eight months, Obaseki has shown that he means well for the people of Edo; with him Edo is in safe hands.”
Legit.ng had earlier reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Assurance Movement recently alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is fine-tuning strategies to rig the poll, while Governor Obaseki, the PDP candidate is coasting to victory on the back of huge grassroots’ support.
National coordinator of the group, Prince Asunogie Tajudeen, made the comments during a press briefing in Benin city, the Edo state capital on Friday, August 28.
Tajudeen urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain above board, stressing that “millions of Nigerians, home and abroad, are closely monitoring the events leading to the poll.”
Meanwhile, the Lead Pastor at Hill City, Reverend Olu Martins has maintained that he remains an unrepentant supporter of Governor Obaseki.
Martins who is also the executive director, Canvassers for Democracy and Rule of Law, was reacting to rumours that he has jumped ship to support the candidate of the APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, ahead of the September 19 governorship election in the state.
Speaking at a press conference in Benin city on Wednesday, August 26, Martins said he needed to denounce the rumour making the rounds before it wears the toga of truth.
