INEC Gives Fresh Details About Edo Poll, Reveals Those Who Will Vote

Ahead of the incoming governorship election in Edo state, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has charged its staff to maintain neutrality and professionalism in the performance of their duties during the election.

Leadership reports that the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the call during a strategic meeting with the commission’s staff on Friday, August 28, in Benin. gathered he said neutrality and professionalism are very crucial, stressing the commission does not support any political party or candidate during elections.

The INEC boss said the choice of who becomes the governor of Edo state is entirely in the hands of the people, adding the task before the commission was to conduct a free and fair election.

“I want Nigerians to find officials and materials waiting for them and not the other way round hence we have to address the issue of logistics. We have adjusted the time from 8 am to 8:30 am and the closing time from 2 pm to 2:30 pm. I am confident you will not let the commission down,” he added.

Yakubu further stressed that the commission was not against any political party or candidate but concerns itself with upholding integrity and transparency during the process.

He also told the staff there are a number of new innovations the commission has introduced, saying, “I am sure you have seen the policy of conducting an election under the COVID-19 era.”

The INEC boss said the commission has made the wearing of face mask and the use of hand sanitizers compulsory.

Meanwhile, had previously reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Assurance Movement said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was fine-tuning strategies to rig the poll, while Governor Godwin Obaseki, was coasting to victory on the back of huge grassroots’ support.

It was reported that the national coordinator of the group, Prince Asunogie Tajudeen, made the comments during a press briefing in Benin city, the Edo state capital on Friday, August 28.

Tajudeen urged the INEC, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain above board, stressing that “millions of Nigerians, home and abroad, are closely monitoring the events leading to the poll.”
