Nigerian military faults reported presence of ISIS in Oyo state

The defence headquarters has dismissed claims that fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) have infiltrated the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo state.

Maj Gen John Enenche, the spokesperson for the ministry of defence told journalists on Thursday, August 27, that the claim of ISIS in Oyo state was nothing but just an alarm.

He said that security agencies were ahead of the evolving security challenges in the country.

The spokesperson assured the public that the ministry of defence had every machinery in place to protect the sovereignty of the country.

The statement from the Nigerian military was in response to claims by the Aare Ona Kakanfo-in-council over the perceived presence of ISIS militants and terrorists in the southwest region of Nigeria.

Legit.ng recalls that the council in a statement on Tuesday, August 25, claimed that the insurgents have been sighted in places like the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo and Niger state through Ibarubalandand.

During a meeting presided over by Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, the council made it known that terrorists in form of herdsmen have already infiltrated the region.

In another news report, the Nigerian military has said it is taking action following the warning by the United States of America African Command (US AFRICOM) about the infiltration of parts of Nigeria by that the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) and Al Qaeda.

Major General John Enenche, the spokesperson for the defence headquarters told journalists at a briefing in Abuja, on Thursday, August 13, that Nigeria was taking the warning seriously, The Guardian reported.

Enenche stated that the Nigerian Armed Forces and all the relevant security agencies are leaving nothing to chance.
