A report by Daily Trust in collaboration with Africa Check indicates that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is not giving out N45,000 as COVID-19 relief.
The newspaper publication debunked the report a number of messages on WhatsApp claims the federal health agency will be giving N45,000 due to the pandemic that is ravaging the country.
“You just won N45,000 from NCDC due to COVID19 pandemic in Nigeria call us on 09063756881 to claim,” one of the message read.
It was reported that there was no announcement by the public health agency confirming the reported messages.
NCDC’s communications team speaking to Africa Check explained that the recent messages are false.
“Any message on relief funds being provided by NCDC is false. Please take responsibility and verify all information before sharing,” NCDC said.
The health agency has already began sending out warning to Nigerians about the WhatsApp messages though social media and texts.
It would be recalled that four months ago presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina denied a report that he said Nigerians with bank verification number (BVN) will be given N30,000 as relief fund.
According to him, the report which went viral on social media is false. He denied this in a tweet on Saturday, March 28.
He consequently urged Nigerians to disregard the information. “Fake news peddlers have concocted a statement, purportedly issued by me, saying FG will pay N30,000 to each Nigerian with BVN, to help them stock up before an impending national lockdown. Not me. The so-called statement is hereby disclaimed,” he tweeted.
