President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the good news from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that Nigeria and Africa has been declared free from polio.

Speaking on the impressive development, President Buhari said that this means he has fulfilled his campaign promise of eradicating the disease from the country.

President Buhari said that he made the pledge that the next leader of the nation after him will not have to deal with polio.

Moreover, the president hailed leaders in the continent and the African Union (AU) for the victory over the disease.

Buhari said that with this feat, he is sure that the world generally will defeat the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “At a time when the global community is battling with the COVID-19 pandemic, this achievement strengthens my conviction that the requisite political will, investments, and strategies, as well as citizens’ commitment, will flatten the pandemic curve.

“I can affirm the commitment of all African leaders in this course of action. We must guard this achievement jealously and ensure that we take all necessary steps to prevent the resurgence of this deadly disease.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that after much efforts from both government and private bodies, Nigeria and Africa, in general, had been declared free from the scourge of polio.

This good news was announced by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health organisation on Tuesday, August 25.

Excited over this, WHO noted that the development marks the eradication of a second virus from the face of Africa since smallpox about four decades ago.

Before this, the ministry of health had cautioned against the “second wave of Covid-19 pandemic” which it said would be disastrous to the economy of the country and lives.
