The Nigeria Police Force has invited a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, for questioning over his recent comments on the Boko Haram insurgency.

According to Sahara Reporters, Mailafia is expected to be at the Force Headquarters in Abuja by 11am on Monday, August 24.

The newspaper cited a letter dated Friday, August 20 and signed by Umar Mamman Sanda, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin), on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Force Criminal Investigation Department).

Recall that the Department of State Services (DSS) had earlier invited Mailafia twice over his claim that a northern governor was a commander of the Boko Haram insurgents.

After the DSS invite, Mailafia explained the source of his information on the alleged commander of Boko Haram.

He said on Thursday, August 13, that he got his information from traders he met in a local market.

Mailafia claimed he got the information via his interaction with some Fulani traders he met in his village market.

He, however, said he apologised to all those who were offended by his statements, adding they were not targeted at anyone. He also said they were not aimed at causing trouble.

Also, the Department of State Service revealed what Mailafia did when he visited its Port Harcourt office.

The DSS said Mailafia had profusely apologised for using fake news to mislead the public.

The secret security agency said on Friday, August 13, that Mailafia was playing to the gallery and desperate to breach the peace in the country.

Speaking on Mailafia’s invitation, the public relations officer, national headquarters, Abuja of the DSS, Peter Afunanya, in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, pointed out this was an indication of an earlier warning about desperate efforts by some notable personalities to use their exalted positions to cause a total breakdown of law and order.

Afunanya said Mailafia had “profusely apologised” during his visit to the Service’s Plateau state command for his comments, only to announce that he stood by them afterwards.
