The All Progressives Congress (APC) media campaign council for the Edo state governorship election has demanded an investigation into Governor Godwin Obaseki’s alleged arms importation, thugs’ escort and massive shootings during his campaigns.
The Nation reports that the party berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate for the shootings at Obaseki’s rally in Igueben, saying the incident affirmed its previous allegation of Obaseki’s importation of guns and inclusion of buses full of armed thugs in his convoy.
Legit.ng gathered that the PDP’s spokesman, Chris Nehikhare, however, described the allegation levelled by the APC media campaign council against Governor Obaseki as false.
The APC media campaign council through its chairman, Prince John Mayaki, condemned the resort to violence by Obaseki, his allies and thugs.
It said: “According to multiple reports confirmed by residents in Igueben and hospital’s records, chaos broke out on August 19 at Igueben, near the home of a PDP chieftain, Chief Tom Ikimi (an indigene of Igueben), when armed thugs escorting Governor Obaseki on a campaign turned on one another in a wild shooting that sent at least one person to the hospital, with a leg damaged by bullets.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the governorship candidate of the APC in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, asked security agencies and the Nigeria Police Force to unmask the identities of the suspects arrested in connection with campaign violence.
It was reported that he said he would not perpetrate violence to win the governorship election because he was not desperate for the office.
In another report, following the alleged plot by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the governorship election in Edo state, the PDP and the APC engaged in verbal war.
The election was slated for September 19, while political parties are already neck-deep in campaigns. The PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, alleged at a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, in Abuja, that APC leaders were arm-twisting INEC to shift the election date.
